AI Should not Surpass Human Authenticity and Intelligence

C.B.Desk: On one hand, there is the older generation, witnesses of first/second generation computer to the internet boom to the 4th Industrial Revolutions. Having navigated their education and professional lives from the 1970s through the 21st century, they have seen the world transition from a mechanical state to an era of smart solutions and automation. At every step, they were compelled to update their knowledge and experience to stay relevant in a changing world.

On the other hand, is today’s young generation, known as Gen-Z. They have grown up surrounded by smart solutions and automation since birth, enjoying all the benefits of information technology from the very beginning of their lives. Currently, they are leveraging smart solutions and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to acquire knowledge in their academic pursuits.

Organized by The AI Collective Bangladesh Chapter, a unique gathering of these two distinct generations, titled ‘Fostering Ethical Legacy in AI: Bridging two Generations’, took place on January 17th at a Book Cafe in Banani,Dhaka.The senior generation explained the journey of information technology’s rise and its current standing from their vast experience and evolving perspectives. Meanwhile, the current generation highlighted their studies on AI, innovative projects, various challenges, adversities, and their preparation for the job market.

Among the senior industry veterans, the attendees included Tapan Kanti Sarker, President of the CTO Forum and T M Nurul Kabir, Executive Director of the Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Representing the young generation were Sayeed Nazmus Sakib (Department of Robotics and Mechatronics, Dhaka University), S M Tawhid (Department of CSE, AIUB), Samia Sayeed (Department of CSE UIU), Sayema Binte Mansur, and Ishrak Hamim Mahi (Department of Computer Science, BRAC University).

The session commenced with a brief overview about The AI Collective and their missions and purpose by the Convenor, Mohammed Asif. He emphasized the Bangladesh chapter’s role in fostering a community that prioritizes ethical principles in development and use of AI. He emphasized on Human role in accountability, transparency and ethical responsibility in the AI development and its adoption.

This casual conversation covered several realistic and important topics, shedding light on the positive and negative impacts of AI, its misuse, and the necessary steps to prevent such misuse. The speakers noted that the general public is falling victim to cyberbullying and the spread of fake content via AI-powered social media. They emphasized that creating mass awareness is vital and suggested using local traditional tools for this purpose.

Furthermore, they stressed that government agencies must enhance their capacity to identify deepfake content to ensure effective support for victims. It was also noted that due to young age and a lack of proper education, many individuals creating videos with AI tools are unaware of what materials are legal or illegal to include.

The speakers also highlighted that our entertainment industry – including dramas, web content, and cinema – must focus on human perspectives in storytelling, character development, and special effects, which would help foster moral values. Finally, they called for specific policies at the government level to ensure the correct implementation of AI-enabled services.

While we welcome the development and promotion of Artificial Intelligence, we must work tirelessly to ensure its correct, ethical and safe use for the welfare of humanity.

The AI Collective Bangladesh Chapter member Md. Aminul Islam, Head of Cards & DFS Operations, NCC Bank, and Kh. Ehsanur Rahman, VP Data Science and AI, Prime Now (Digital Bank) were also present and participated in the lively fireside discussion.
