The inaugural event, held on recently, at Gulshan 2, brought together prominent educators, founders, CxOs and tech-experts to discuss empowering people to develop and adopt AI ethically and responsibly.
The event commenced with an insightful overview on the purpose of the AI Collective Bangladesh Chapter by the Convenor Mohammed Asif. He emphasized the chapter’s role in fostering a community that prioritizes ethical principles in development and use of AI, stating “We believe that AI has the power to transform our world a better living place but this can only be achieved by building a community that prioritizes ethical principles and shared knowledge. Our goal is to ensure that as we progress, we do so with a foundation of trust, transparency, and a focus on human well-being.”
One of the founding members Nawshad Jahan Promee hosted a dynamic panel discussion where Dr. Shamim Ahmed, Associate Professor from the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, Dhaka University and Firoze M Zahidur Rahman, CEO & Chief Solution Architect of Loosely Coupled Technologies, Malaysia. They fielded questions on the profound impacts of AI on the education and development sectors, as well as the anticipated challenges and changes in future research, the tech industry, and the job market.
“AI Ethical Care Center should be introduced.” Dr. Ahmed emphasized increasing collaboration amongst all stakeholders, such as research institutes, the government, industry etc. He has also focused on Robot Policy for the country.
Zahidur Rahman said “We should be able to understand the difference between Ethical and Illegal terms exclusively while talking about AI; otherwise, a misconception will be growing in the people’s mind regarding AI”.
The discussion then expanded to an open forum where a diverse group of attendees, including tech experts, educators, CTOs, bankers, trainers and human resources experts, contributed to an engaging exchange of ideas on how AI will influence our life and society.
Dr. Tanzima Hashem, Head of the Department, CSE, BUET said, “Restricting students from using ChatGPT or similar AI tools may actually limit their growth. Instead, the focus should be on guiding how they use these tools effectively”.
Dr. Hasan Mahmood, Lead, Learning & Development, Beximco Pharmaceuticals said, “We should think AI as a partner that helps us to sharpen our skills rather than replacing us”,
G.M. Faruk Ahmed, AGM, Rupali Bank and a Cyber Security Expert trainer, emphasized drafting and finalizing the National AI Policy in which all regulators of different industries will ensure their active participation.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a closing speech by Sami Al Islam, another founding member of the chapter. He underscored the importance of the community and discussed plans for future events and programs designed to enrich the conversation around ethical AI development.
